Introduction

This lesson is about the human microbiome in our bodies. The main goal is that students learn about the role bacteria play in our lives and that they reconsider the negative connotation we have about these organisms. It is hoped that students will come to realize the omniscient presence of bacteria, that they disassociate the concept of bacteria from sicknesses and instead, that they re-direct it towards the important role bacteria play in health, industry, and in our own evolution. The prerequisites are that students have a basic knowledge of biology at the high school level - in particular, the biological kingdoms. It is also necessary for the teacher to have knowledge about how to use the chemistry and biology lab at the high school level. The materials needed for this lesson include: the activity sheet “Where are my bacteria?” (included); a computer with internet; a ruler; a pen; a notebook for note taking and record keeping; and laboratory material. This lesson will require two class sessions, separated by six days needed to perform the 3rd classroom activity included in the lesson.
